Temperatures reached scorching levels on Saturday as the top ten finalists at the Shoprite Checkers Boerewors Championship battled it out for the coveted title. The sun wasn’t the only thing making the temperature rise; sizzling Boerewors braai-ing over perfectly prepared fires and cheering crowds made the Valley of the Waves at Sun City the place to be this week end.
After four months of gruelling elimination rounds the competition went from over 1000 entrants to the top ten and then there could be only one winner. The title was at long last awarded to Piet Nkambule at the exciting grand finale.
Piet (62), from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, was crowned Boerewors Champion 2012 and received the grand prize of a brand-new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider. He also received a R2500 holiday voucher from All Gold, R2000 Coca Cola cash prize and R750 worth of Simba vouchers.
Piet has been in the industry for many years and has entered the competition 19 times over the years. This year he decided to use a special blend of spices from Crown National and it paid off. “My secret to the best boerewors lies in the special ratio of pork to beef meat I include in my mixture”, says Piet who also swears by the effective use of good quality spices to deliver tasty boerewors.
The runner-up and second runner-up also entered using spice ingredients from Crown National. Second place was awarded to, Mary Mkhabela from Mashishing in Mpumalanga and third place went to Crown National employee Quinton Rossouw, from Kempton Park in Gauteng.
Roy Maasdorp, Key Accounts Director (Supermarkets) at Crown National said, “Seven out of the ten finalists chose to use Crown National spices in their recipes this year. We are thrilled that we were the preferred choice for the majority of the contestants’ Boerewors ingredients”.
An independent judging panel comprising of top food experts Martin Kobald, Arnold Tanzer, Carmen Niehaus, Jenny Morris, Peter Veldsman and Lungile Nhlanhla had the challenging task of tasting and judging the grand finale, singling out one winner from this year’s selection of truly unique and outstanding finalists’ entries.
Entries were initially judged in raw form, followed by a braai-off during which contestants had to prepare their own secret recipe boerewors.
Mr Maasdorp said, “The factory team were on stand – by, waiting for the winner to be chosen. They have worked throughout the night and all of Sunday to get the sought after Championship Boerewors ingredients to Shoprite and Checkers stores across the country”.
The 2012 Championship Boerewors will be available in the Meat Markets of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores countrywide from Friday, 12 October.
